One of the "best" games ever made, managed by the STUPIDEST people alive. Firing half your dev team, including the one guy that made all your music actually good and enhanced the whole experience, was the last goddamn straw for me. Fucking Bungie.

I hate this game so goddamn much it's unreal. I played it for free for all of 10 minutes and I still felt ripped off. I wanted to shoot myself after 2 minutes. I wanted to shoot myself and at least five other people after 5 minutes. I wanted my entire city block to explode after 8 minutes. Everyone responsible for allowing this turd of a video game to exist should be fired.

The game is horribly unoptimized, the first few days of launch were HORRENDOUSLY broken, game balance is fucking wack, plenty of severely frustrating bugs (ha ha ha *eyeroll*) even a month in and then Sony had to come in and ruin the entire game for everyone because of their bullshit. This could've been a legitimately great co-op game, but everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

The terminids are kinda hot though so. Points for that.

PC Cyberpunk 2077

Played on the 2.x updates.

I got decently far in 1.x and thought, shit, there might be something good here, if they gave it more time in the oven. Absolutely unacceptable state the game was in on release, honestly, given all the delays/yellow text walls of dread. 2.0 didn't make it *perfect* - there were still some things broken as ever but aside from that... wow. They fucking nailed it. The atmosphere is PEAK. Getting me *truly* invested in the world and characters is a rare feat. And the gameplay is near-perfect - one of the rare few games where ANY build you want to use, genuinely works. I've done heavy gun builds, explosives, punching people into gore, quickhacking, stealth... it all works. None of it necessarily outclasses the others. There is no "meta". Thank fucking god.

I never usually get emotional at stuff but somehow 2077 of all games is the one to do it.

Now THAT is how you make a DLC.

This is the one. Where I started bawling like an idiot at the ending. I'm not going to go into detail but the overall theme of mortality ever-present both in the base game and the DLC started hitting TOO close to home and it became too much at the end. Fuck. They actually made me want to live in Night City really bad - and considering the infinite nightmare corpo hellworld cesspit it is, that's a HUGE compliment.

It's a walking simulator like the rest of Lu's games. You just walk around and talk to characters.

That's not what I'm here for though. Let's not kid ourselves here - there's only one reason to play Lu's games and I don't need to spell it out.

The epitome of "politics in my videogame".

That joke feels almost insulting to such a magnificent game. There is really nothing I can say about it, honestly. I'm so upset that, as massive as this game is, it was just a FRACTION of what the intended, finished creation was supposed to be before everything went to hell with the company. Like holy fuck I think they wanted this game to be 10x bigger than it actually is.

The mail is the one final hope for resurrecting a dead planet from its ashes, and the letter carriers are the brave soldiers of God in this righteous crusade. They are the defenders of the light of knowledge, free communication, and the exchange of ideas. PS2 Drakengard
Condensed due to length. Click to reveal.I understand not liking this game. If you gave up on it though, I'm sorry but you got filtered. There is a reason to the insanity.

Even I don't fully understand this game myself - I'm still missing some of the context around its development, but point is, this game was a one-in-a-million occurence. Square Enix wanted a Dynasty Warriors killer. Cavia had no experience with this sort of game. Yoko Taro, being Yoko Taro, drove the tone and plot of the game to insane degrees. He was asked multiple times to revise the script: he refused to budge, even faced with the possibility the game may never release. He was getting so tired of working on the game, himself. Someone tried to go to Sony with a pitch - Sony were so fucking tired of pitches that they greenlighted the game without even looking at it.

The game is the anti-thesis to the typical JRPG story. The main cast reflects as much - Caim is a psychopath (and also the best video game character ever alongside Jack Garland. no I will not explain why) and all you do in the game is feed his addiction to killing, killing, killing. The music in the game represents the tone of the game pretty well - discordant, disorganized, chaotic. You become desensitized to the violence, just as he is, to the point where by the time your party members are yelling at you for fighting literal child soldiers, you just don't care. Caim doesn't care. More meat for the slaughter. His quest to save Furiae is meaningless - in what world is it possible for a mass murderer like him to ever lead a "normal" life with his sister? In contrast, there couldn't have been a better pair than Caim and Angelus. The same thing drives them both: pure, unflinching violence. No wonder they start sticking together like glue. Inuart is just such a pathetic character, even more so than Furiae. His hero complex drives him to insanity because there is no place for such a thing in the world of Drakengard.

There is no possible happy ending to a world like this. The only remotely "positive" ending is the one where Caim learns to not let himself be consumed entirely by hate - and it comes at the cost of the only thing he's ever loved. Angelus.

I could go on and on about this game. I won't. You need to experience it for yourself. Drakengard can never happen again because of the unique conditions it was made in. It will forever remain as this.. anomaly, this *thing* that doesn't fit with most other games. And I love it dearly for that reason.

Video games will forever remain one of the most important mediums because of the limitless ways they can be engaged with. I'm not going to sit here and pretend it's a higher or "better" form of art - but they are art nonetheless, and they push the envelope on what art can be. You just cannot have this kind of shit in movies, or books, or paintings.

This is what it's like to watch your childhood die.

While I didn't mesh too well with the game myself, I understand that it succeeded at what it set out to do, now that I've thought on it for a while. To quote ranrannerson on Backloggd - because of course, other people are better with words than I am:

"true maturity is attained when you accept that the stuff you thought was cool when you were twelve is almost always genuinely cool, you just associated it with the cringe of your youth and thus felt you had to be irony poisoned about it"

PC Silent Hill 4
Condensed for length. Click to reveal.Fuck everyone that hated on this one. Fuck everyone who excludes it out of the "duhh these are the only REAL silent hill games" lists.

Hell is other people. The outside is hell. Walter understands this too well. I understand too well. Silent Hill 4 handles the kind of fear that not many other games have been able to cover well, the kind of fear I experience myself every day: The "other". Other people. Other places. Places that aren't "home". Being seen. Being perceived. The way people act. The way they look at you, the sounds they make, their presence in your presence - even their presence when they aren't aware of you. Your world changes by the mere existence of another person in the vicinity, no matter how limited the interaction between the both of you.

The only real way of coping with all this stress is to retreat. Back to where you know you can't be hurt. Back to where you know you'll be safe. For Walter, it's the apartment his mother died in. He doesn't know anything else. He's been abused, taken advantage of, left to die. He does the only thing he knows how to do, and he doesn't know it's wrong, because there was never anyone to tell him it's wrong.

How strange it is that I relate to antagonists more than anyone else.
